Homes and shops have been left without power after a power cut in Cambridge.

A number of stores, including Sainsbury's have been forced to close, with more than 200 properties without power, including some near the colleges of University of Cambridge.

The outage was first reported at 10.26am and a spokesperson for UK Power Networks said the it was caused by an underground electricity cable fault. They say they are hoping to restore power to all homes by 2pm this afternoon.

They added: "Engineers are now on site, carrying out investigations into the fault. Once they have completed their assessment, they will carry out repairs."

UK Power Networks have said that the power cut was caused by an underground electricity cable fault on the high voltage network, but not only three properties in the area are without power. The main areas of the city affected by the power cut are Sidney Street, as well as the nearby colleges of the University of Cambridge.

A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: "This outage is affecting multiple areas, so locations we mention may be further away than you'd expect. We have already sent staff to the area, but at the same time we try to restore power remotely by redirecting the electricity around the faulty section.

"It's possible your power may go on and off as we try to restore as much power as we can. The engineer will head to the local substation and after checking the network, will attempt to restore more power from there.

"If unsuccessful, they will locate and repair the issue, which will take longer to get the lights on. Our staff work as quickly as they can, so you might not hear about everything we're doing, but we'll always try to give you the clearest information we have."
