Troy Deeney had a shocker when he sat in the Celebrity Mastermind chair as he failed to get a single answer right during his specialist subject round.

The ex-Watford and Birmingham City forward has just been promoted to the hot seat with Forest Green Rovers, who are struggling in League Two. It was another hot seat that proved too much for Deeney though on Friday night as his knowledge was put to the test.

He chose Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film trilogy as his specialist subject, but Deeney clearly had a mind blank. The 35-year-old was able to see the funny side as he laughed at his own poor showing. His general knowledge proved slightly better as he landed six right answers, eventually finishing third.

After his terrible attempt host Clive Myrie said: "That chair, this atmosphere..." Deeney could only smile as he replied: "It's intense".

The ex-Premier League striker's new focus is on preventing Forest Green from suffering successive relegations and heading back to non-league. They currently sit in 23rd, five points from safety, after drawing 0-0 with Gillingham on Friday night.

Deeney headed to the New Lawn in the summer with a view to beginning his coaching career, but that has since been fast tracked. He originally joined as a player-coach but after David Horseman was axed just five months into his role Deeney got the call-up.

His lack of experience will be a concern, something Deeney understands, and he accepted that fans will have reservations about his appointment. “I know the fans will have many questions, which will be answered as soon as possible," said the new boss.

"We will not hide from the task at hand and will be open and honest along the way. One thing I can assure everyone is that we will work our very hardest to bring this wonderful club back to success. This is an exciting new role with many challenges that I'll embrace and there's a lot of work for us to do, which has already started."

Fans will hope that Deeney's football IQ outranks his Spiderman trilogy knowledge after his poor display. Over the festive periods Forest Green take on Newport and Swindon on the road before a home game against AFC Wimbledon.
