A plane full of passengers was forced to abandon its landing at Manchester Airport due to the strong winds of Storm Pia.

Footage shows a Finnair flight from Helsinki struggling with the gusts over the runway, appearing to almost touch down before soaring back into the sky. The pilot had to execute a 'go around' before successfully landing. Manchester Airport confirmed a number of planes have been rerouted due to the weather. Some were sent to East Midlands or Stansted, but the airport remains open.

A spokesman for the airport said: "There is a yellow weather warning in place today for high winds. Please check with your airline for the latest fight information. Road and rail services may be impacted. Plan ahead and allow extra time and care for your journey to the airport." Finally, they assured passengers: "The safety of our passengers is a top priority, and we appreciate your patience during this time."

The Met Office's yellow weather warning for wind is set to last until 3pm today. In Greater Manchester, several roads were shut this morning due to trees knocked down by Storm Pia, and numerous train lines are blocked. In Manchester, gusts of up to 50mph were predicted, while winds could hit a whopping 80mph in some parts of Scotland.
