Is it even Christmas if you don't watch Home Alone at least once?

While the iconic film was released 33 years ago, eagle-eyed fans are only just noticing the reason why Kevin's family didn't know he was missing sooner. The festive blockbuster stars Macaulay Culkin as the adorable child Kevin and Schitt's Creek star Catherine O'Hara as his mum. The film was so successful that five sequels were produced and are enjoyed every Christmas.

In the original film, Kevin manages to defend their huge family home from villainous crooks when his family accidentally leave him behind when they rushed to the airport to spend Christmas in Paris. We are led to believe that when Kevin's cousin Heather does a headcount, she including the pesky neighbourhood child - thinking he was Kevin.

But, fans have just noticed the real reason the McCallister family don't turn back or noticing Kevin is missing until they get on the aeroplane to France. Hundreds of Home Alone fans have rushed X - formerly known as Twitter - in surprise after clocking the easily missed Easter egg which explains exactly why he didn't make the family holiday.

It does seem peculiar that the family don't even realise he is missing in the airport - his missing ticket and passport could be the reason.

Remember when Buzz was messing around in the McCallister home and pretended to throw up so Kevin could get his cheese pizza which had been eaten. Of course, Kevin tackled Buzz and was left in trouble. The fight caused milk to spill all over the plane tickets and passports.

Dad Peter cleaned up the mess and threw away what he thought was used and dirty tissues. But, if you look closely at the shot of the bin, you can see that Peter also accidentally binned Kevin's plane ticket. When the family boarded the plane, the cabin crew member took all the tickets and let the whole family on board - without really checking them properly.

So, is Peter to blame for Kevin not making his flight? Eagle-eyed fans rushed to X to share their thoughts on the shocking realisation. One individual said: "I have seen Home Alone probably one billion times, but I was today years old when I realised they [the family] threw out Kevin's plane ticket during the pizza debacle. That's why no one figured out he was gone earlier at the airport."

Another added: "I have watched Home Alone for the past 25 years or so! I know the concept is about the family forgetting Kevin but never noticed this little detail before. Peter McCallister picks up Kevin's passport and ticket and throws them in the bin."

A third commented: "That certainly adds context to a line Kevin had in the second movie. It's a good thing that I have my own ticket, in case you guys try to ditch me." One other said: ""Okay this is crazy and I'm sure people have found this Easter egg many times, but for me I just realised that in Home Alone, Kevin's dad accidentally threw away Kevin's plane ticket.

"Which explains how they didn't realise anyone was missing handing out tickets at the gate."
