Carragher sparks fan reaction as he compares Liverpool star to Cristiano Ronaldo

Dominik Szoboszlai hammered home Liverpool's opener

Jamie Carragher has sparked debate after hailing Dominik Szoboszlai's strike as " Cristiano Ronaldo -esque" in Liverpool 's Carabao Cup tie.

The Hungarian star opened the scoring against West Ham with a stunning long-range strike. His form has been criticised but the summer signing, once again, showed his appetite for scoring from distance having done so in the early rounds of the competition.

Carragher on commentary observed how Szoboszlai had struck the ball in the same style as Ronaldo. The Portugal icon revolutionised how players go about shooting and the Sky Sports pundit said the goal was "almost Cristiano Ronaldo-esque the way he hits the ball".

One fan commented on social media: "Cristiano and Gerrard. That level of clean strike that was." Another concurred with the commentator's observation: "Fully agree with Carragher there. That goal was Ronaldo-esque". Not everyone was on board though with some refuting comparisons between the two players.

The ex- Liverpool defender went on to say after the Reds' opener: "Liverpool deserved that. We've seen it once before in this competition at the Kop end against Leicester and we've seen it now against West Ham. West Ham have been poor in this first half and this sums them up. A great chance to counter-attack and hurt Liverpool. Ben Johnson stands off maybe he's not aware of Szoboszlai or the strengths he's got."

Szoboszlai produced another wonder strike earlier in the tournament as Liverpool saw off Leicester City at Anfield. The former RB Leipzig man had scored three times prior to their Carabao Cup tie with many hailing his influence since making the switch.

Klopp beamed earlier this season when he discussed the potential for Szoboszlai to be a huge success. "He just loves playing this kind of football. I think he plays a different position to what he played at Leipzig, for example, but with his skillset he can play higher up the pitch as well," said the German.

“He has the speed to pass players, he has the technique, the finishing skills we didn't even see them yet properly but his shooting is really special. We put him slightly deeper, involve him more in the game, he enjoys that a lot and he is doing well, really well."
