Moment woman falls from ferris wheel in front of horrified onlookers
This is a moment a woman fell from a ferris wheel meant for children before dying in front of horrified onlookers.
Maria do Carmo, 49, was seen perched on one of the ride's metal benches and speaking to a group on the ground in Brazil. A man then turned on the manually operated amusement ride. She fell face down and smashed her chest against one of the wheel's iron bars.
Following her fall, Maria experienced cardiac arrest and received emergency assistance from a nearby nursing technician. The fire department raced to the scene, used a defibrillator and performed CPR to try and resuscitate the woman. Despite their best efforts, paramedics pronounced her dead.
Authorities closed off access to the ferris wheel, which is located in a restaurant playground. There is a sign in the ferris wheel area which signals that it is only accessible for people who are aged between five and 10.
Iury Vieira, one of the restaurant's owners, spoke to the Brazilian news outlet G1. He said that each ferris wheel bench had a safety lock alongside another device to prevent falls, yet this is only for children. The restaurant has been open for nine years and has a valid operating licence and permit, but it does not cover the ferris wheel.
Missing radioactive capsule found after huge search - and it's the size of a peaYet the fire department stated it was not their duty to inspect the ferris wheel. Lieutenant Matheus Viol stated that the restaurant's owners and its technical manager were culpable for making sure the ferris wheel was checked by the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy of Minas Gerais.
Vieira said they did not have an operating licence for the ferris wheel and the playground. He was unloading merchandise into the restaurant and his father was at the cashier register when Maria experienced the deadly fall.
Vieira stated: "We didn't really see the fact, of her actually falling off wheel. A guy was with her and called me into the restaurant. Then I saw the fact that she had fallen to the ground."
