George Clooney has revealed that Matthew Perry found no happiness in filming Friends.

Matthew made millions of people laugh on the world's biggest sitcom as the loveable Chandler Bing, but behind closed doors, the actor was battling with an all-consuming cycle of addiction. While his sarcastic character of Chandler was the favourite of six legendary castmates for many fans of the TV show, which ran from 1994 to 2004, Perry struggled with acceptance.

He took the role so personally and revealed to being just like the funnyman - a question fans often consider when analysing their favourite stars. Following Matthew's death earlier this year, George shared that he "wasn't happy" on Friends.

He told Deadline: "He was a kid and all he would say to us, I mean me, Richard Kind and Grant Heslov, was, ‘I just want to get on a sitcom, man. I just want to get on a regular sitcom and I would be the happiest man on earth.'

“And he got on probably one of the best ever. He wasn’t happy. It didn’t bring him joy or happiness or peace," the 62-year-old added.

In his book, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, Matthew expanded on this, explaining that the reaction from live audiences from the show played on his mental health. He wrote: "I felt like I was going to die if the live audience didn't laugh," he said of his dark experience at the Friends reunion show.

"And it's not healthy for sure, but I could sometimes say a line and they wouldn't laugh, and I would sweat and just go into convulsions. If I didn't get the laugh I was supposed to get, I would freak out. I felt that every single night. This pressure left me in a bad place."

His costars were devastated to learn how much he had been struggling, and it turned out that he was also facing battles in his private life around self-esteem and commitment. Perry said: "I need love but I don't trust it. If I drop my game like Chandler and show you who I really am you might notice me - but worse you might notice me and might leave me, and I can't have that."
