Eddie Howe was furious with the referee's failure to send off Moises Caicedo during Newcastle's defeat at Chelsea on Tuesday.

The Magpies suffered a frustrating loss in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. They took the lead at Stamford Bridge through Callum Wilson, but a last-minute mistake from Kieran Tripper allowed Mykhaylo Mudryk to equalise before the Blues won on penalties.

Howe spoke to reporters after the game and expressed his disappointment at Jarred Gillett's decision to only book Caicedo in the opening stages. Chelsea's £115million midfielder produced a poor late challenge on Anthony Gordon from behind.

Caicedo caught the back of Gordon's calf with his studs, and the winger was unable to finish Tuesday's game. He is now a doubt for Newcastle's Premier League clash at Luton on Saturday. Howe could potentially be without 13 players for the trip to Kenilworth Road.

Gordon wasn't the only player to be on the receiving end of a poor tackle. Levi Colwill caught Emil Krafth's shin with his studs, which led to the Newcastle defender coming off at half-time. Krafth has been left with a "nasty" injury and is also a doubt to face Luton.

Howe made his feelings known on Chelsea's tackles during his post-match interview. The Newcastle manager told reporters: "Emil was too sore to continue - he's got a nasty gash on his shin which is quite sore at the moment. Anthony's the same.

"I thought it was a really poor tackle on him and the type of tackle you don't want to see taking one of our attacking players out of the game, and again he's very sore at the minute."

Howe was pressed for his thoughts on Caicedo's challenge in particular during his interview with Sky Sports. He said: "I'm going on what other people's opinions are and not mine - I haven't seen it myself but people are telling me that they think it's a red card."

Sky Sports pundits Jamie Redknapp and Karen Carney were split on whether Caicedo deserved a red card. Redknapp said: "It's a really stupid bad challenge. Two minutes into the game, it shouldn't matter what minute of the game it is, but I think it's a yellow."

But Carney argued: "That's a red for me. It's late. He's nowhere near the ball. He goes down the back of his calf and as the game goes on, you see their best player go off injured. I don't think he's meant to hurt him. I think it's just reckless."

Newcastle's treatment room is packed with Nick Pope expected to be out until April with a shoulder injury. Elliot Anderson (back), Jacob Murphy (shoulder) and Harvey Barnes (foot) won't to play again for at least another month due to their respective complaints.

Joe Willock (Achilles), Joelinton (hamstring) and Fabian Schar (muscle) will all miss the Christmas period, although Alexander Isak (groin) could be available to face Luton. Javier Manquillo (groin) and Matt Targett (hamstring) will both be out for a while yet.

The final player missing for Newcastle is Sandro Tonali, who is serving a suspension for breaching betting rules. He will be available for selection again in August 2024.
