Metropolitan Police and Chelsea have confirmed that they are investigating the incident that saw Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka confronted by a pitch invader.

The Slovakian stopper was approached by a fan in the aftermath of Mykhaylo Mudryk ’s stoppage time equaliser against his side in the Carabao Cup quarter-final. The fan appeared to taunt Dubravka before being ushered away by stewards.

The Newcastle star came away from the incident without being harmed but Jarred Gillett held lengthy talks with stewards and both managers ahead of the penalty shootout that took place in front of the travelling Magpies fans.

Now, it has been confirmed that Metropolitan Police and Chelsea are taking a close look at the circumstances surrounding the incident. No arrests have been made so far.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino condemned the actions of the individual during his post-match press conference. He said: "I didn't see it but I listen afterwards. My opinion? Always, I think we need to be careful, the fans need to be careful. I don't like this type of thing because it can put in danger the players.

"Of course, I am disappointed. I do not agree with this type of thing that happen in football here at Stamford Bridge and I don't agree if it happens in another stadium in England or around the world. I don't agree with this type of thing because I think it is so dangerous and I hope it doesn't happen again."

Elsewhere, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe called on authorities to do more to guarantee the welfare of all involved in the game. He stated: “We say the safety of players, coaches and managers, referees and linesmen, that’s the priority in any football match. So more has to be done to keep especially irate supporters away from anybody.”

Chelsea secured their place in the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Callum Wilson had given Newcastle the lead at Stamford Bridge before Mudryk equalised as he capitalised on Kieran Trippier ’s error.

The England defender missed from the spot, while Djordje Petrovic denied Matt Ritchie with a stunning save to secure Chelsea’s spot in the final four. Chelsea will find out their semi-final opponents on Wednesday evening. Fulham and Middlesbrough have already progressed, with the last quarter-final between Liverpool and West Ham yet to take place.

Meanwhile, Newcastle turn their attentions back to the Premier League after their eliminations from both the Carabao Cup and Champions League. They next travel to Kenilworth Road for a clash with Luton.
