A&E forced to close and NHS strikes damning indictment of Tory government
A&E departments closing and hospitals cancelling more appointments over strikes by junior doctors are a damning indictment of Tory incompetence. It is reprehensible that Rishi Sunak’s party in England has failed to end the walkouts. This is a catastrophic error from a stubborn No10. Downing Street playing politics with patients is a new low even for Sunak. He must take personal control and sit down with British Medical Association leaders to end the walkouts. Junior doctors risk alienating the public with a three-day strike before Christmas and a six-day stoppage in the New Year, so we urge them to accept that their huge loss in earnings since 2008 won’t be recovered overnight. But talking is better than striking and the Tories are primarily to blame for yet another NHS horror show.
Esther agony
Esther Rantzen’s daughter Rebecca is speaking from the heart when she talks about her mum who might end her life with dignity at Dignitas in Switzerland. Dame Esther, who has stage four lung cancer, has triggered a national debate. For Rebecca it is particularly agonising. She is torn between wanting to respect her mum’s wishes and not wanting her mother to board a flight to end it all. These conflicting feelings demonstrate the dilemma posed by assisted dying. We must now have a national conversation, so both sides in the debate learn from those with different views. What happens on this issue really matters when it is a matter of life and death.
It was the pits
Miscarriages of justice were widespread in the Miners’ Strike in 1984/85. But a proposed law to right these terrible wrongs in England and Wales seems unlikely to be introduced as things stand. If so, we hope a future Labour government would rectify the situation.
