Villainous Damon Hay will be making a return to the Cobbles in the New Year

Coronation Street will air a huge double return in the New Year - as Adam Barlow finds himself in serious danger.

Following his split from Sarah Platt, the pair have maintained a good friendship to co-parent her son Harry. On New Year's Eve, when Adam drops Harry off with Sarah, he notices she's all dressed up and assumes she's got a date.

Keen not to lose face, he says he has a date too - but they both soon admit that neither of them have anyone to be with and Adam offers to buy Sarah a glass of champagne. The tension between them is obvious and it's clear they both like each other.

The next day, Adam reassures Sarah he is feeling much better after suffering a panic attack and makes a plan to help Adam tackle his anxiety together. He is hopeful that this is a new start for the pair of them.

When they part outside the pub, neither of them are aware that Damon is watching. As Adam heads to his office, he is followed by a man in a van. He is tied up in the back of the van - but will he be ok?

Adam is horrified when he sees Damon stroll into the bistro and gets on the phone to give the police a tip off, whilst Nick and Leanne are horrified by Damon's arrival as he demands them for the money that he gave Harvey to invest in the bistro.

The police arrive to question Damon about Adam's kidnap, and he rushes over to the factory to tell her about Damon's return and his kidnap, but Craig arrives there and soon it becomes clear that Sarah was with Damon the previous afternoon.

After a mysterious phone call, Damon heads to the prison to see his brother Harvey, but what does Harvey want for him and will this spell more trouble for the residents of the Cobbles as two villains return?

Speaking about what's to come, soap boss Iain McLeod revealed: "It kicks off, almost in the first moment of the New Year, as it is revisiting the unfinished business between Adam, Sarah and Damon. So yeah, we arrive in the New Year. Adam and Sarah are rubbing along okay and they're trying to amicably co-parent Harry as per the agreement when they split up. It's going alright, and then suddenly, wallop, Adam finds himself in this nightmarish situation all at the hands of Damon, who has unexpectedly come back."

Teasing that Damon has been plotting his revenge, Iain said: "The first of [Damon's plans] is that he wants to get his revenge on Adam and the second of them is that he wants Sarah back because he feels like she's 'the one' and he will essentially have to contend with the fact that these two plans might not be compatible, like can he have his revenge and also have Sarah? The answer might well be 'no'. So which one is he going to choose? It's a brilliant, exciting, high-octane story."
