Arteta gets fourth yellow card this season after making fury clear at referee

Mikel Arteta was booked for the FOURTH time this season during Arsenal's Premier League game against Brighton on Sunday.

The Gunners boss was shown a yellow card at the Emirates after Brighton winger Karou Mitoma was booked for pulling back Bukayo Saka. Arteta reacted furiously on the touchline to the foul and referee Tim Robinson responded by going into his pocket.

Arteta has been criticised in recent weeks for his animated touchline antics and behaviour towards referees. "I respect the fact he's booked Arteta for getting in the fourth official's face too because he does it too often," Clinton Morrison told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Arteta was absent from the touchline for Arsenal's 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa earlier this month after serving a one-match ban for picking up three yellow cards this season. The Spaniard will be handed a two-match ban if he's booked eight times.

If a Premier League manager receives 16 yellow cards this season, they will need to attend an FA misconduct hearing. A one-match ban will be handed to any boss who receives a straight red card, but that ban could be longer if there is violent conduct.

Arteta now has the most yellow cards out of any manager in the Premier League this season. Manchester United's Erik ten Hag and Fulham's Marco Silva have received three each, while six other managers have two bookings to their name.

Arteta's third yellow card of the campaign after Declan Rice's dramatic winner in Arsenal's 4-3 triumph against Luton earlier this month. "I could not be seated in my seat," he told beIN Sports. "It was pure emotion. If that's a yellow... that's a yellow."

Arteta added in his post-match press conference: "I think we have a boundary that maybe we have to extend or we just need a very strong rope with the bench so maybe we don’t move. That means we don’t move, all of us, we don’t move."

He also seemed reluctant to change his ways. He continued: "I think I’m going to be in a director’s box. I don’t know... but let’s see. I will have a really nice view hopefully. I don't know how to stop (celebrating), it was a really emotional moment.

"You have everybody bouncing around and you lose sense of where you are, and the space that you have to be in. It was unfortunate because now I cannot be next to my team on the touchline. But it is a decision that they have made."
