Quaker Oats has issued an urgent recall notice for 43 different cereal-based products over fears they may contain potentially deadly salmonella.

The popular food manufacturer issued the warning that granola bars and cereals from across its range could contain the sometimes-fatal bacterial disease on Friday (December 15). And they have now urged consumers across the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan who may have bought the affected items to dispose of them immediately.

People usually get salmonella when they eat raw or uncooked meat, such as poultry - with symptoms initially appearing similar to the flu. But they can later develop more severe diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting and fevers. And in the worst-case scenario, children or those with weakened immune systems can develop medical complications, which can turn out to be fatal.

Some of the products affected include the firm's cereal bars - such as their Big Chewy Chocolate Chip Bars and their Quaker Oatmeal Raisin Chewy Bars . While others include their granola-based breakfast items - such as Quaker Puffed Granola Apple Cinnamon Cereal and Quaker Puffed Granola Blueberry Vanilla Cereal.

The US based business has now advised consumers to “check their pantries” for products marked with specific best before dates, which have been outlined on the FDA's website.

A spokesperson for the firm said: “The Quaker Oats Company today announced the recall of specific granola bars and granola cereals listed below because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

“In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. The products listed below are sold throughout the 50 United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and Saipan. Consumers should check their pantries for any of the products listed below and dispose of them.

They added: “To date, Quaker has received no confirmed reports of illness related to the products covered by this recall. Quaker has informed the FDA of our actions. This recall only applies to the specific products below. No other Quaker products are impacted.”

Earlier this year, CNN reported that five people had died in Canada from a salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut and whole cantaloups. The incident also left around 360 people suffering with bouts of illness from the fruit, which had been linked to a supplier based in Mexico and sold in several different supermarkets.

While in the UK, a 65-year-old man, Niptoon Tavakoli, died after eating duck eggs that he purchased at a local county show in 2019.
