No-fuss 55p kitchen staple removes condensation and mould without dehumidifier

Not addressing mould can have costly consequences in your home, and can also be bad for your health - but budget-conscious homeowners have discovered a cost-effective solution to tackle the issue.

Whilst the solution often used to address mould and condensation in the home is a dehumidifier, it can set you back a couple of hundred pounds - that doesn't include the extra electricity bill you'll be racking up. But a simple 55p solution has been discovered by eager-eyed homeowners which can solve the issue.

All you'll need to try this hack is to simply walk into a supermarket and buy some washing-up liquid. Depending on the brand you pick up and the store you go to, you may be paying a few pennies extra but Essential and own brand washing-up liquid will only set you back 55p, whilst own brand is 62p and Aldi and is 69p.

You may not even need to head to a supermarket, because more than likely you will have a spare bottle of washing-up liquid under the kitchen sink. All you need to do is pour some of the liquid onto a dry cloth or the soft side of a sponge and wipe the window with is so it's covered with the liquid, reports .

One person, who tried the hack, said: "Fairy liquid (or any cheap variant) on a dry cloth, wipe the window so it is covered in the stuff. It will look smeared which is fine. Then leave. Don't dry off. Let it dry naturally." They said their results the very next day were no condensation or "mass of water droplets" the previous night.

While this is a good way of preventing condensation, a dehumidifier in your home can help make the air drier and therefore healthier environment. It can reduce mould and mildew, dust mites in carpets and fabrics, and even fights high humidity.

A compressor dehumidifier is often the most common choice however there are common costly mistakes people are making that are adding to their bills. According to experts, those who choose to buy dehumidifiers usually choose the wrong size for their space.

Dehumidifier experts at Honeywell said: "A dehumidifier's capacity is measured in pints of water removed per day. If you pick a unit that's too small for your room, it won't effectively reduce condensation and humidity levels fast enough.

Where a dehumidifier is placed can "significantly impact its performance. Placing it in a corner or near walls and obstructions can restrict airflow, reducing its efficiency". It's recommended to place the dehumidifier in the centre of the room to allow better circulation.
