A former Tory council leader has backed Labour’s candidate in the by-election to replace disgraced MP Peter Bone.

Martin Griffiths, who has served as a councillor for 17 years, and is a former leader of Wellingborough Borough Council, said the area needs an “honest MP. Someone with integrity who puts residents first.” In a video message announcing he’d back Labour candidate Gen Kitchen, he said: “Our former Conservative MP has exploited his position, refused to stand down when called out and is costing taxpayers in excess of £100,000.”

Wellingborough Mr Bone could be booted out after Parliament's behaviour watchdog upheld complaints of bullying and sexual harassment made against him by a former member of staff. A recall petition opened in the Northamptonshire constituency this week and will close on Tuesday (19 DEC). If 10 percent of voters in the seat sign the petition it will result in a by-election.

And if Mr Bone does choose to defend his seat in the by-election, he’ll do so as an independent. He was suspended from the Commons Conservative Party in response to the watchdog’s report.

Of Ms Kitchen, Mr Griffiths said: “She’s hard working, has great ideas and really listens to what people need.” He added: “We need a fresh start and Gen Kitchen is the only person that can deliver that.”
