Bulgaria's run as the home of the cheapest skiing holiday in Europe has come to an end. Bardonecchia in Italy has beaten Borovets to top the best value adult skiing chart in Post Office cost comparison of 36 European ski resorts.

For the first time in a decade, Bulgarian ski resorts Borovets and Bansko have lost their position as best value across Europe. Instead report, produced in partnership with Crystal Ski Holidays, found that Italy’s Bardoneccia is now the place where your money goes the furthest.

A week's skiing in Bardonecchia will set one adult back £381 and food and drink £150 for that period while you're on the slopes. Without flights or accommodation included, the cost for a week's skiing is £351, compared to £553 for Borovets in second and £611 for Le Corbier in France.

In Bardonecchia two mountains extend up from either side of the valley town, which is characterised by an unspoilt natural environment with coniferous forests and beautiful panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Jafferau is higher and gets the best snow, with most of the slopes there well above 2000m. It has many runs that are perfect for intermediate skiers who are retuning to the slopes. There is a free bus between the part of town where most of the accomodation is and Jafferau.

The Colomion side of the valley hosted the freestyle events at the 2006 Turin Olympics and gnarly snowsters can still ride the Olympic halfpipe at Melezet. This area of varied slopes has better variety as it is home to the best beginner zones, as well as some steeper challenges and some very accessible off piste tracks closer to the summit.

Bardonecchia can easily be reached from Turin, either via a 50 minute drive along the motorway from Turin or on the TGV. It is also two hours from Milan, which is very well connected to the UK through often particularly cheap flights.

New resort Jahorina in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the cheapest option for bargain hunting British families looking to get onto the slopes without breaking the bank, according to the Post Office report. A family can expect to pay £1,656 for week's skiing there.

The findings of the 17th annual Ski Resort Report come as a survey of 2,001 adults found that a significant number - 12% - are planning a ski holiday between December 2023 and April 2024. A third of these will be family skiers.

Laura Plunkett, head of Post Office Travel Money, said: “Many parents taking their children skiing will want them to attend ski school and the cost of this can add considerably to a ski holiday. Before choosing a ski resort it will therefore make sense to check our barometer to compare tuition costs. Prices have rocketed in Bansko, adding significantly to the family budget, while resorts like Jahorina, Passo Tonale and Geilo are much cheaper.

"With every penny counting this year, we advise changing cash before leaving home rather than at the airport or ski resort where ski holidaymakers risk getting a poor rate. Take enough cash to cover ski and living costs and be aware that transactions of over £500 will get a better rate in our branches or on the Post Office website.”
