Over four days next week, there is a widespread risk of snow, a leading weather forecaster predicted.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden gave an updated warning that "talk of milder weather for this weekend is missing the bigger picture for next week".

He stated that forecasts "will soon be discussing the prospect of widespread snow". Mr Madden also shared what the most likely dates are for snow flurries to hit, as we enter the Christmas and New Year period, with particular attention being paid to December 19 and December 22.

Madden believes the majority of the snow will fall in the "northern half of the country". Yet he said it wouldn't "necessarily [be] restricted to these parts as the week progresses". He even said that a classic "White Christmas" was on the cards for some areas of the country on December 25.

Mr Madden told BirminghamLive: "The risk of a true White Christmas will still primarily remain with parts to the north of the country. But some subtle changes between now and then could literally see this whole outlook changing significantly to deliver the chance of more widespread snow within the 24 hours of Christmas Day."

However, looking ahead over the next few days, the Met Office said for the most part it would be dry and somewhat cloudy, with an occasional bright interval. There will be more of a chance of patchy rain developing on Sunday night into Monday and it will be breezy.

The Met Office stated that temperatures will generally be above average, especially by nightfall. It also put out a medium-term forecast for the week of Christmas, which is expected to bring milder weather.

Last week, bookmakers' gave a 3/1 chance for a White Christmas, with Glasgow the most likely place in the UK to experience snow on December 25, while Edinburgh and Newcastle were also near the top of the list.

Meanwhile, the Met Office has responded to fearsome weather maps showing a huge polar storm arriving on December 24 - and poured warm water over the chances of a White Christmas, stating a more detailed forecast is needed next week.
