Patti Smith released from hospital 'in good health' after 'sudden illness'

Patti Smith is reportedly “in good health” after she was hospitalised in Italy due to a “sudden illness”.

The 76-year-old was on tour in the country when she was taken ill on Tuesday, just hours before she was due to perform a concert at Teatro Duse in Bologna. Patti was forced to cancel the gig as she underwent checks at the Maggiore hospital in the city after falling ill, and a statement from the venue said she suffered from a “sudden illness”.

The American singer-songwriter has since been discharged from hospital after being kept under observation. The Local Health Authority of Bologna added that she was in “good health” after “a short period of observation in emergency,” adding that the medical team hopes to see her resume her tour after “an appropriate period of rest.”

Patti has now cancelled a concert at the Malibran Theatre in Venice on Thursday, as well as a book signing in Milan which was due to take place later this week. Her hospitalisation comes just days after she performed four concerts in the country, including gigs at the Modena Cathedral over the weekend, as well as stops in Schio and Siena.

A spokesperson for the Teatro Duse in Bologna released a statement after Patti fell ill, which read: “With great regret, we inform the kind audience that Patti Smith's concert will not be able to go on stage due to a sudden illness that struck the artist. We are all sorry for the inconvenience caused by this news. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to the artist.”

She is currently still scheduled to perform three more shows in the US, with a concert in Chicago on 27 December, and two in Brooklyn, on 29 and 30 December. It’s not yet known if those dates will be postponed.

The music icon has previously spoken about her lifelong battle with a bronchial condition, and revealed she had to isolate during the Covid-19 pandemic due to her health. “I was a sickly kid, sometimes they were worried that I wouldn't pull through,” she told The Guardian, as she confessed it was difficult for her to put performing on hold during lockdown.

“I had so much responsibility and a true purpose. To be in limbo almost 10 months, for a person like me who doesn't like sitting in the same place, it's been very challenging. I feel like I'm part-wolf, roaming from room to room,” she shared.
