'Tory migration rules will hurt the millions of elderly Brits who need care'

The Tories are pushing the care sector deeper into crisis

There are more than 2.5 million elderly people in the UK who are not receiving the care they need.

Cost is one factor but another is the shortage of care workers. There are more than 150,000 vacancies in the sector, one in 10 of all positions. This staffing crisis will only be resolved when carers are paid a proper wage.

The Migration Advisory Committee has told ministers raising pay will help recruitment and ease the reliance on overseas workers. But the Government has not only shown no interest in wishing to address this problem, it is about to make the situation even worse with its new restrictions on migrant workers.

There are fears this will result in the worst of both worlds: it will push the already struggling care sector into deeper crisis while doing nothing to improve pay and conditions. Those who will suffer from this short-sighted approach are the elderly and vulnerable.

It’s a fair COP

The best that can said of the agreement reached at the COP28 summit is it is a step in the right direction. For the first time, the international community has recognised the need to wean the world off its reliance on fossil fuels.

While this outcome is better than the initial proposal on the table it falls short of what is required to tackle the climate crisis. Signing an agreement to “transition” from fossil fuels is very different from pledging to phase them out completely.

The Dubai summit’s host hailed an “historic achievement”. Future generations may regard it as an historic missed opportunity.

Miss the Mark

Wales will be poorer without Mark Drakeford’s principled leadership. The First Minister is a softly spoken radical who has never been ashamed to call himself a socialist.

His quiet determination and dignity stand in contrast with the shower in power in Westminster for the last 13 years.
