Liverpool 'cost Chelsea a hell of a lot of money' as Caicedo price tag slammed

Glen Johnson believes Chelsea were forced to pay over the odds for Moises Caicedo due to their bidding war with Liverpool.

Caicedo, 22, became the most expensive player in the history of British football when he completed a £115million switch from Brighton to Chelsea in August. It was extraordinary price tag for a player who had completed just one full season in the Premier League.

Caicedo has since failed to make an impression at Stamford Bridge, registering no goals or assists in 17 outings in all competitions. Mauricio Pochettino's side are also struggling to pick up results, as they sit 12th in the Premier League after back-to-back defeats.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are top of the table, with their four new midfielders - Endo Wataru, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai - all doing well at on Merseyside. Johnson believes Chelsea may live to regret their investment in Caicedo.

"He’s a bloody good player, but I don’t think he’s living up to the massive hype when Liverpool and Chelsea were fighting over him and it was talk of the town," Johnson, who played for both Liverpool and Chelsea during his career, told Betfred.

"What I think Liverpool have done there is cost Chelsea a hell of a lot more money and I don't think he's living up to that hype. He’s a good player. Was he worth the price tag?

"Probably not. Brighton only had one chance to sell him, so they obviously tried to ride that hype to get as much money as they possibly could for him, but for me, he’s not living up to that hype. I would still say he’s a good signing, but not for that price."

Do you think Chelsea paid over the odds for Moises Caicedo? Let us know in the comments below!

Chelsea have spent more than £1billion on new players since Todd Boehly's consortium purchased the club from Roman Abramovich in May 2022. Only a handful of those signings - such as Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling - have lived up to their billing so far.

Caicedo wasn't the only midfielder to snub Liverpool for Chelsea in August. Romeo Lavia, the 19-year-old Belgium international, was also a transfer target for the Reds but decided to leave Southampton for Chelsea instead. He's yet to make his debut for the Blues.

Klopp suggested Liverpool were "lucky" to miss out on the pair during a Q&A with Liverpool supporters on Monday. He said: "The summer we had with a few strange things happen in the transfer market but here between us I can say, 'My god, we were lucky'.

"We didn't know that in the moment, to be honest, we didn't realise in that moment. But I am really happy it worked out like that. You never know if it will work out like that."
