A Florida school board has demanded that co-founder of conservative campaign group Moms for Liberty Bridget Ziegler step down from her role.

The demand was made after police opened an investigation into Ziegler’s husband, Christian, who is accused of rape by a woman who claims she was engaged in a three-way relationship with both Zieglers. The Sarasota County School Board has now voted overwhelmingly to ask Ziegler to voluntarily step down from her role on the board.

Christian denies the accusations he has called “false”.

Ziegler voted against the measure but lost 4-1, a result she described as “disappointing” - even though she cannot be forced to resign. Ziegler, whose husband is Florida’s Republican chairman, has not suggested she plans to leave the school board despite the vote.

She is one of the founding members of Moms for Liberty, a conservative campaign group which advocates against any elements of a school curriculum which teach about LGBT rights, race and ethnicity, critical race theory, and discrimination. In recent years the group also campaigned against any Covid-19 restrictions, including mask and vaccine mandates, in US schools.

In the resolution against Ziegler, the board’s chair Karen Rose said if she remained there would be an “an irreparably harmful distraction to the school board's ability to fulfil its critical, constitutional mission of operating” adding that it is “not about the left, it's not about the right, it's about students”.

Rose added: “Any proposal I put forward is based on instruction, learning and what is in the best interest of our students. Safety and security is foremost.” But the motion isn’t legally binding despite being unanimously voted for by all other than Ziegler.

While Ziegler did provide much of a response to the motion, she pointed out that no other boards she sits on felt it was an issue and requested that the board’s lawyer, Patrick Duggan, confirm the vote “does not have any teeth” legally. Only the Florida governor Ron DeSantis, has the power to remove Ziegler - but the board did not write a letter to the presidential hopeful.

Ziegler and DeSantis are known associates, having previously worked together on the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Bill. But the governor, who is currently fighting the Republican presidential primaries, has called for Christian Ziegler to step down as state Republican chairman as the investigation - for which he has not yet been charged - is ongoing.

Sarasota parents were scathing in their assessments of Ziegler’s apparent hypocrisy - after preaching family values and campaigning against LGBT rights while allegedly being involved in a three-way relationship including another woman. “BZ must resign now, like the Wizard of Oz the curtain has been pulled back on Bridget Ziegler,” Joyce Peralta said.

“While claiming she was fighting for family values, it is now evident that Bridget and her husband Christian were fighting culture wars for the couple to gain power money. How many parents delighted this week in having to answer the question from their children ‘what is a three-way’?”

Peralta said she doesn't care “what consenting adults do privately” but was uncomfortable with the “campaign of hate” Ziegler led based on her apparent views on LGBTQ+ issues. “Your children deserve privacy that will only be obtained when you and your husband remove yourself from the public positions that amplify your hypocrisy,” she added, according to the Daily Mail.

Resident Rudolph Lucek added: “I am not here to characterise the sexual proclivities of Mrs. Ziegeler, Having sex with another bowman in a threesome with her husband is not the issue. But when you claim the moral high ground and then you attack the moral integrity of others the blatant hypocrisy of Mrs. Ziegler and how it reflects on the credibility of this board is a significant concern to this community.”

Christian Ziegler’s accuser claims she was raped at her apartment in October this year, with police documents stating that the Zieglers and the third woman had planned a threesome that day - but Bridget could not make it. According to the accuser, Christian came anyway and sexually assaulted her. Christian denies these as “false allegations”.
