UK city power cut hits thousands with roads in chaos and buildings in darkness

A city-wide power cut has affected thousands of homes in Liverpool, with roads left in "chaos" and buildings in darkness.

Just before 3.30pm, people in the city reported the electricity in dozens of postcodes had shut off. The worst hit areas include Hope Street, Rodney Street and Mount Pleasant, where people are reporting street lights, traffic lights and homes were affected.

One woman said: "There's a power cut in Liverpool City Centre, the traffic lights are out around: - Mount Pleasant - Rodney Street - Hard man Street - Hope Street The roads are chaos and most of the buildings have no electricity." Scottish Power Networks has confirmed they were made aware of an issue and they had "no advance warning", reports the Liverpool Echo.

An update on the Scottish Power Networks website says: "There is a power cut affecting the L1, L3 and L7 postcode areas of Liverpool. We had no advance warning of this and first became aware of it at 3.24pm. Our engineers have arrived onsite to find and fix the fault as quickly and as safely as possible. We expect your electricity supply to be restored by 7pm."

"We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience." Postcodes affected include, L1, L130BQ, L19AS, L19AX, L19BD, L19BH, L19BQ, L19BX, L19BY, L19DE, L19EF, L19HZ, L19JG, L315TQ, L35, L35RF, L35SR, L35TB, L35TF, L35TQ, L35XF, L35YD, L697ZX, L77BJ, L77BL, L77BP, L77DL, L77DN, L77DP, L77EA, L77EE, L77EJ, L77HA, L77JB, L93ES.
