Pete Wicks has thanked fans for sending him support after he endured ‘brutal’ health conditions in Australia.

The 35-year-old former The Only Way Is Essex star has been Down Under to support his best friend Sam Thompson - who won the recent season of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Pete was in Australia waiting for 31-year-old Sam to complete his time in the jungle - and was waiting to hug him when he finally crossed the bridge after being crowned the show king.

But while he was in Australia, Pete came under attack from bugs - even through he wasn’t on the ITV show or forced to endure any Bush Tucker Trials. He was instead eaten alive while he was relaxing in a nearby hotel as he became the buffet of choice for the local mosquito population.

After being repeatedly bitten in the face, poor Pete suffered from puffy bites, while the skin around his eyes became swollen and looked painful and unsightly. However, now he is set to fly back to the UK, the reality star has reported that his swelling has gone down and he feels and looks like his old self again.

Taking to social media on Tuesday, Pete thanked for that had been in touch out of concern. Uploading a selfie to Instagram Stories, the Lothario acknowledged the kind messages he had received from his followers - and thanked them for their support.

The former The Only Way Is Essex star wrote: “Thankfully my face has returned to normal following the brutal and unprovoked attack by Australian Mosquitos. Thank you all for your support during that difficult time.”

While Pete didn’t compete on I’m A Celeb, the fact that his best friend Sam won the show has subsequently had a positive impact on his own career. The two boys - who became friends after starring on Celebs Go Dating together in 2019 - host a podcast together titled Staying Relevant.

It had previously been announced that Pete and Sam would take their podcast on the road for a UK tour in 2024 - with dates set in major cities including Glasgow, Manchester and London. And now thanks to the boost in popularity Sam has received after appearing on I’m A Celeb, the tour has reportedly sold out.

There is also speculation that Pete could be returning to the UK with a new love interest after he was spotted getting close to I’m A Celeb contestant and former EastEnders star Danielle Howard. The pair set tongues wagging when they were spotted looking inseparable after she exited the jungle and Pete continued to wait for Sam to depart the show.

During a wrap party at the start of the week, photos emerged that appeared to show Pete and Danielle kissing, while other images showed them with their hands all over each other. A spokesperson for Pete has attempted to downplay the speculation, saying: “he absolutely does not have a new girlfriend.”
