Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is set to return to first-team action in January, as he continues to recover from a dislocated shoulder while playing for Scotland.

Robertson, 29, suffered the injury in a Euro 2024 qualifier against Spain on October 12 and had to undergo surgery to fix the problem. He has since missed Liverpool's last eight Premier League matches, with Kostas Tsimikas and Joe Gomez deputising in his absence.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Robertson is back out on the grass doing running work and is making daily progress at the club's AXA Training Centre. His load is split between treatment and strengthening the injured shoulder, with Robertson not yet seen doing contact work.

The Scotland international cannot risk getting his arm clattered when the shoulder has not fully recovered but could return to general fitness early. Liverpool face an action-packed end to 2023 with five matches scheduled, including back-to-back Premier League home matches against Manchester United and Arsenal.

After missing Scotland's final two Euro 2024 qualifiers last month, Robertson issued an update on his condition and admitted everything was progressing "well" with his recovery. He told Viaplay Sports: "Yeah, getting there, slowly but surely. Surgery was a success, which was the main thing, no complications from it.

"So far, so good. I think I'm about three weeks since my surgery now, so everything is progressing well. Just bit by bit, got to take it week by week. Everything has gone well up to this point and hopefully that continues and then hopefully before we know it I’ll be back on the grass."

Speaking after Robertson suffered the injury, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that the ex-Hull defender would miss around three months of action, which would take it to mid-January. "The decision we go towards is surgery," said Klopp back on October 20. That means he's out for a while. I don't know exactly how long."

Klopp added: "You only see the real extent of injury when you have a look into it, like properly open (up the shoulder) and fix it - but my experience tells me around about three months."

Some Liverpool fans were a little concerned about how they would get on without Robertson, but the Reds have motored impressively in the Premier League. In the eight top-flight matches Robertson has missed, Liverpool have won six and drawn two.

Klopp's men came from behind to secure all three points in their last encounter - a last-gasp 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. The Reds boss was not too pleased with his side's performance, however, as goals from Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott earned the win.

He said: "We really turned the game around, the subs were super-influential and made a super impact. That's actually the story so far this season, what we bring from the bench has a real impact.

"That's why we could do it, but again if Harvey mishits that ball, it's a draw, if Mo is not there where he is and the ball doesn't get deflected then we lose the game. I know these things happen like that, but with the last 15 or 20 minutes we deserved it. Before that, we deserved nothing."
