Peter Barlow will bid a heartbreaking farewell to Coronation Street in sad scenes at the end of this month.

Chris Gascoyne is departing his role as Peter after 23 years in Weatherfield at the end of this year, with the ITV soap having now confirmed how he will leave the Cobbles in just a couple of weeks' time.

In an emotional episode, Carla and Peter will look over their long relationship together before eventually deciding that they are better off apart. As they sit down for one more meal, will they be able to come to terms with what life looks like without each other?

Peter will be seen heading out of the flat with a holdall, as Carla closely follows them behind. Touched by all that's happened, and surprised to see his whole family there, with the exception of Simon, Peter is overwhelmed.

In scenes that will no doubt leave fans in tears, Peter will exchange an emotional farewell with each person before heading away, with one final promise to Ken that he will keep in touch with them.

This will mark Chris' final scenes on the soap after two decades playing Peter Barlow. He will take an extended break from the soap, with fans no doubt hopeful he may return to the joys of Weatherfield one day.

He has starred in a huge storyline as of late, having been the one to finally take down evil serial killer Stephen Reid. He drove over him with his taxi, fearing that Stephen might hurt Jenny, who he had taken hostage.

Speaking about Peter's struggle after the crash and how they didn't want him to fall off the wagon with his drinking, soap boss Iain McLeod said: "We were very clear when we started this chapter that we didn’t want him to fall off the wagon again so you won’t see that. We thought it was important that he, as a transplant recipient, didn’t drink again because we were worried about the messaging around that. But that does not mean that he won’t profoundly struggle psychologically with his demons."

Alison King - who plays Carla Connor - also opened up about the loss she felt when Chris confirmed he was leaving.

"I hate it when he leaves me. It's horrible but luckily I just hand him over to his normal wife, let her have him for a bit and then he comes back and he can have his on-screen wife for a bit," she said.
