Your iPhone could get 12 big free upgrades this week - here's what's new

iPhone owners have just been treated to a shiny upgrade tonight with Apple finally unleashing iOS 17.2 on the world. This latest operating system upgrade - which has been in beta test mode for a while - comes packed with new features including the useful Journal app.

This application was first announced all the way back in June and has been designed to make it easy for iPhone owners to write about what's happening in their lives. As well as adding daily musing, Journal can use personalised suggestions to help make entries and schedule notifications to remind users to add a post.

Things such as photos, places visited and workouts performed can also be included with everything stored on the device only and locked behind Apple's Face ID security.

Journal isn't the only new addition in iOS 17.2 with a further 11 changes appearing in this update including the ability to shoot movies in a format called Spatial Video.

These 4D-style films are being introduced ready for the release of the Vision Pro mixed reality headset next year with owners able to watch old events and feel like they are actually back in the past. Spatial Videos are currently only available via the iPhone Pro models but expect that to change in the future.

Another update targeting those Pro devices is the addition of a Translate option for the new Action Button which features on the side of this latest device. It basically means with one tap users can instantly launch the app and get a translation if they don't understand the local language.

So what else is new?

More widgets, such as Sunrise and Sunset calendars are being released in iOS 17.2 as well as more options to change the default sounds on your iPhone.

Apple Music users will get a new Favourite Songs Playlist function which makes it easier to find tracks they really like and want to listen to.

Other extras include new ways to customise Memojis, better iMessage reactions and Contact Key Verification plus the ability to add Rainbow Text when creating new Contact Posters.

To get this update simply head to Settings > General > Software Update. iOS 17.2 is over 1.3GB in size so you're best off downloading it when connected to WI-Fi unless you have unlimited 5G mobile data of course.
