Stephen Mulhern hits out at Deal Or No Deal contestant after 'cheeky' comment

New Deal or No Deal host Stephen Mulhern snapped at a player and branded him 'cheeky' minutes into Monday’s show.

When lucky player DJ Pete was called to the hot seat to take on the Banker in this afternoon’s show, he tried his best to take home the £100,000 prize. After two rounds, he earned himself the nickname ‘Play on Pete’, but eventually went home with £9,000 in his pocket.

But it wasn’t his playing prowess that got viewers talking. It was his quip about the Deal or No Deal set that provoked what fans called one of the funniest moments of the new ITV series so far. Pete jokingly asked host Stephen, who has taken over presenting duties from Noel Edmonds on the revamped game show: “Is this the table from Bullseye? I feel like there should be tankards and bullys on here” as the audience erupted into laughter.

Stephen hit back: “No it’s not, you cheeky git!” and fumed: “No, this is a brand new table, thank you. These are brand new boxes, this is a brand new Banker and. brand new series.” A chuckling Pete added: “It is, but I didn’t know if you had borrowed this from...” as Stephen finished his sentence: “From Jim Bowen?”

TV legend Jim presented the hit darts quiz show Bullseye from 1981 to the mid-Nineties. Pretending to call the former TV host up, Stephen joked: “You alright Jim? You still got that table, yeah, you know from the 1980s? Oh, I’d love to use it on a new series of Deal or No Deal. Cheers, you can’t beat a bit of Bully.”

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, after the show, one fan wrote: “The whole Bullseye, Bully, Stephen pretending to ring Jim Bowen on #DealOrNoDeal is the best and funniest part of the new series so far. That and Reece winning 1p #PlayOnPete.”

Another chimed in: “Pics from this afternoon’s #DealOrNoDeal. I paused the telly and loved Stephen’s smile and when Pete got under the table it made me laugh.” Pete did indeed get under the table later on in the show when it was revealed his box contained the £100,000, but he dealt at £9,000.

One fan fumed: “Omg Play on Pete, why didn’t you plan on! Hell of a game #dealornodeal #itv.” Another commented: “Play on Pete gonna be kicking himself for the rest of his life #DealOrNoDeal.”

A third wrote: “Pete dealt at £9k when he still had £100k, £50k, £7.5k, £5k and £3k in the board... What was he thinking? Definitely would have gone on #DealOrNoDeal.” A fourth said: “The 100k came for Play on Pete and he didn’t listen to his own advice #DealOrNoDeal.” While a fifth added: “Gutted for Pete!”

The new series of Deal or No Deal kicked off on November 20 in its new home on ITV with new host Stephen Mulhern at the helm. In its first week, it attracted more than 2 million viewers.

Last week, fans were shocked when ‘Steven Gerrard’ appeared in the audience. Viewers flocked to comment on the audience member’s striking resemblance to the famous footballer – but it turned out the man was the partner of a contestant on the show.
