Tottenham keeper Guglielmo Vicario has responded to Callum Wilson after the Newcastle striker hit out at him following Sunday's clash between the two sides.

Wilson returned to action as a second-half substitute after weeks out with a hamstring injury, by which time his side were 3-0 down to a rampant Spurs. That duly became 4-0 before Wilson teed up Joelinton for a late consolation goal.

But the England international was then involved in an angry confrontation at the final whistle with Vicario, after the Italian had appeared to stick his tongue out in a bid to wind him up. Wilson reacted angrily and criticised the goalkeeper's behaviour in his post-match interview.

Wilson also made reference to the behaviour of Everton No.1 Jordan Pickford on Thursday, who like Vicario appeared to mock Newcastle players in the final moments of their midweek defeat at Goodison Park.

“There's a way to win, isn't there?" he said, on Sky Sports. "I think we saw it in the week when Everton were winning and (Jordan) Pickford was messing around. The goalkeeper starts pulling faces and messing around and it's just a lack of respect I thought. But I said my piece, we're grown men and we move on.”

Vicario took to social media to reply on Sunday night and posted a picture of him and Wilson arguing, and added his opponent's quote to the caption with an 'embarrassed face' emoji. He added: "Respect is given to everyone that respects me."

There is previous between Wilson and Tottenham players. In May, after Tottenham were beaten 4-3 at Anfield, the 31-year-old joined Michael Antonio in mocking Richarlison on their The Players Channel podcast. The Brazilian striker had scored an injury time equaliser and been booked for taking his shirt off in the celebrations, only for the Reds to go down the other end and score again.

However, it was Richarlison who had the last laugh on Sunday, netting twice after Destiny Udogie's opener. The outstanding Son Heung-Min added the fourth from the penalty spot before the visitors finally gave their fans something to cheer about.

Spurs also seemed to reference Richarlison's two-goal response to Wilson's dig with a post on their official Twitter page. The Brazilian's head was photoshopped onto Michael Jordan's body in a famous meme from The Last Dance, alongside the caption "And I took that personally."

Eddie Howe will welcome the return of Wilson though ahead of a pivotal Champions League tie with AC Milan on Wednesday. The Magpies are currently ravaged with injuries and suspensions with Howe reportedly set to bring in loan signings in the January transfer window.
