Willy Wonka star Timothee Chalamet reckons the people of Hull have landed the Golden Ticket with one of the world’s sexiest accents.

The Hollywood actor revealed his love for the northern twang in an interview with LadBible. He said he admired the Essex accent as well as a “middle aged northern accent”, adding “Hull is sexy”. The footage went viral after the camera crew started laughing at his remark. Chalamet, 27, is then heard asking: “Why is everyone cracking up?”

TV star Lucy Beaumont, who is from Hull, said: “I’ve had this accent for 40 years and no-one has ever told me it’s sexy.”

Lucy, who wrote the sitcom Hullraisers and the radio play To Hull And Back, added: “He looks like a very lovely young man. He should stay away from the region or he’ll be savaged by middle-aged Hull women.”

Chalamet’s opinion was met with surprise on social media, with one person writing: “Timothee Chalamet saying Hull is sexy is the highlight of my year.” Another added: “Can someone ask Timothee how he knows that Hull exists.”

Timothee, who is from New York, was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a Bafta for romantic drama Call Me By Your Name. His latest part is of the famous chocolate factory owner in Wonka, a role previously played by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp.

The prequel, out on Friday, follows Wonka’s exploits as a young man. So women of Hull, if you spot Timothee out and about in the city, there’s a fair chance he’ll buy you a rum and kerk or even a draaa whaaat waaane.
