Wolves are preparing a cut-price £7million January raid on Turf Moor to land Burnley captain Josh Brownhill.

Molineux boss Gary O’Neill has admired Brownhill, valued at £20 million by Burnley, since he was in charge at Bournemouth and the left-sided midfielder is now top of Wolves ’ wish-list when the winter window opens.

Bownhill, 27, is already well into the final year of his contract and Burnley are believed ready to trigger a one-year option on the star who has been at the club for almost four years since his £9million move from Bristol City. But they may have left it too late with O’Neill determined to land the Clarets captain either next month - or in the summer.

Bownhill fell out of favour with boss Vincent Kompany early in the season after Burnley signed Norwegian international Sander Berge from Sheffield United. But after playing a leading role in Burnley’s spectacular return to the Premier League last season, Brownhill has since re-established himself as a key performer for Kompany, scoring three times in the Premier League.

It’s believed Brownhill is open to a move to Wolves although Crystal Palace, Fulham and Championship high-flyers Leicester are also keen on the hard-working star.
