H&M's cream suit has some Christmas potential

The festive season brings with it the excuse to get glammed up no matter the occasion, so many of us will be looking to add new on-trend pieces to our wardrobes this winter to see us through our busy social calendars.

While I’ve already for Christmas parties, I appreciate that not everyone wants to don a dress over the festive period.

An equally elevated but perhaps even more versatile alternative is the mighty power suit. These tailored-inspired co-ords give an androgynous look, and can often be worn time and time again throughout the year. Not only that, but if you buy a two-piece, you immediately get three outfits - the pair together, the trousers with a nice top, and the blazer with jeans - so girl math says it’s better value for money, too.

In order to find the very best on the high street this winter, I took a trip to M&S, River Island, H&M, Primark and New Look - and while one didn’t have a matching set in sight, one had them in abundance, including a knockout celeb-approved two-piece that’s perfect for year-round wear.

Mirror Choice Best high street festive suit - River Island

River Island is without a doubt the place to go if you’re looking for a and co-ord to wear to the work’s Christmas do, or other festive event this December. Not only do they have the best fitting suits, but also a vast selection of them to choose from, too, meaning you’ll be sure to find something that suits your personal style.

I actually tried on four suits in River Island, including a fabric, as well as a and trouser co-ord which felt very ‘Emma Willis’ and is perfect if a blazer isn’t quite your vibe. I also tried on a with sparkling embellishments, but it was this that was a knockout for me.

The while the , which is on the higher end of the high street price scale, however, the suit I tried on in Marks and Spencer cost more - and I’d get a lot more wear out of the red because it’s a classic colour that never goes out of style.

I tried the suit on in a size 10 and found everything to be true to size - but there’s one feature that makes the River Island trousers superior to most. They’ve got a hidden , which means they look smart and tailored from the front, but have a secret bit of stretch at the back which makes them perfect for Christmas Day, too, because there’s nothing worse than having to undo your top button after a roast.

For me the red suit screams Christmas, but if it’s not your favourite it’s also available in blue, yellow, black and cream, which a . The may be popular among shoppers, though, after it was . The former The Saturdays singer described it as ‘the . She added: “The fabric is amazing and it’s the perfect fit. It sits so nicely, slightly oversized, and looks so much more expensive in real life than it does online.” And I agree with every word she said.

The thing for me that makes this co-ord really stand out though is the finer details. Its slightly really elevates it, and as Frankie said, makes it look as though it would have a much higher price tag. The elasticated waist makes the comfortable to wear, and the overall look is a real head turner. You can buy the and

River Island really did put the other retailers to shame with their selection of suits, as I actually struggled to find matching sets in some stores. New Look didn’t have a suit that looked particularly festive, and the they had on the mannequin may have looked a little too corporate with the matching trousers, so instead I styled it with one of our for an alternative co-ord.

The in the sale and is definitely a piece you’ll come to reach for time and time again, while the - it’s slightly higher than the standard £25.99 range with it being a little more glam, but if you’ve heard me rave about these before, you’ll know they’re worth every penny. That said, I didn’t exactly love this outfit as much as I’d hoped, which knocked it out of the running for the festive party fits - that’s not to say that both pieces aren’t standalone stunning pieces, though.

My least favourite look came from Primark, where they stocked an abundance of blazers but not many matching sets. I did happen to find this though which was giving Chanel vibes on a lemonade budget, but the shorts simply weren’t to my style. I don’t know about you, but I like my legs to be warm when I’m walking to the taxi rank after the Christmas party!

The and it has a subtle shimmer running through the fabric, but I often worry about plucking this kind of material - I’m far too clumsy to not ruin it in one wear. The matching shorts are generously sized, but even Primark recommend styling the with something else. On the website, the retailer said: “It’ll work perfectly with the matching shorts and shirt, but we’d suggest styling it with a midi dress and heels for a gorgeous evening ensemble that’s sure to turn heads!”

H&M proved more fruitful, where I tried on a sage green suit that didn’t feel quite festive enough for me, as well as a cream coloured number, which provided a bit more of a blank canvas that you could throw some Christmas at. I tried on the with the before confirming I am, in fact, more of a wide leg kind of girly these days, but added a which I thought made for a great finished look. Overall this would have cost £87.97 for the three items, so much cheaper than River Island’s £115 for the blazer and trousers.

These are some serious statement pieces to add to your winter wardrobe, but I was definitely looking for something a little more wearable, classic and practical. I found my hair getting caught in the sequins of the jacket and despite being lined, it was quite scratchy to get the skirt on. But if you can look past these minor inconveniences, then it really is a killer co-ord for Christmas.

While Marks and Spencer reigns supreme for their wide leg jeans, and New Look top the table for their satin skirts, it's River Island that has taken the cake on Christmas party suits in 2023. You can shop the celeb-approved blazer here.
