Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is set to face a new criminal case as Federal prosecutors have filed fresh charges against him.

This comes on top of existing charges in Delaware related to a gun purchase. Hunter was accused in June of illegally having a gun 'as a drug user' and not paying federal income tax, according to a letter filed in the US District Court in Delaware. The latest charges span nine counts, including failure to file and pay taxes; evasion of assessment; and false or fraudulent tax return according to CNN.

The special counsel’s team claim Hunter Biden “engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million” in taxes that he owed from 2016 through 2019. Prosecutors also allege he included “false business deductions in order to evade assessment of taxes to reduce the substantial tax liabilities he faced" in taxes paid from 2018.

The indictment in September came shortly after a plea deal fell through that would have avoided a criminal trial and unwanted headlines for President Joe Biden. The legal battle doesn't look like it will end soon as Biden's defence lawyer argues he didn't break the law and is still covered by an immunity clause that was part of the plea deal.

In addition, he's being investigated for his business activities, and the special counsel has suggested that tax charges could be filed at some point in Washington or in California, where he resides.

The legal wrangling is happening alongside a political battle. The House has officially started an impeachment inquiry into the Democratic president, trying to link the elder Biden to his son's businesses and shift focus from former President Donald Trump 's own legal troubles.

Meanwhile, House Republicans have warned Hunter Biden that they will move to hold him in contempt of Congress if he doesn't appear this month for a private deposition. Hunter Biden has said he will only testify to the House if it's in public. However, top Republicans have told him that their subpoena for a private deposition on Dec. 13 is non-negotiable.

Comer and Jordan stated that both parties have historically sought private sessions before public hearings when questioning witnesses. Hunter Biden, however, has refused to testify behind closed doors, arguing that information from such interviews can be "manipulate[d], even distort[ed], the facts and misinform[ed] the American public." This stance aligns with the more assertive approach taken by his legal team in recent months as congressional Republicans attempt to link his father to his business dealings through an impeachment inquiry.

President Biden dismissed allegations of illegal or unethical behaviour regarding his son's business dealings as "lies" on Wednesday. The president was asked about these claims after he spoke about funding the war effort in Ukraine. This comes in the wake of a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs which found that most U.S. adults believe the president acted illegally or unethically in relation to his son.

"I'm not going to comment on it," said Biden about the GOP allegations. "I did not. It's just a bunch of lies. They're lies."
