Netflix star shares 'annoying' sacrifice he made for Natalie Portman sex scene

Even in sex scenes, some actors have to make sacrifices for the art of filmmaking.

Charles Melton, who's received rave reviews for his performance in Netflix's May December, shared that while filming the dramatic movie he had a certain appendage that helped him get a foot up.

For a sex scene between his character Joe and Natalie Portman's Elizabeth, Charles donned a prosthetic penis for nine hours. The actor told Variety that it was "annoying" to wear.

"There were a few conversations about the prosthetic, regarding what was realistic and what wasn't,” he said, "And I had to wear that prosthetic for nine hours that day. I didn't have anything to drink that morning or the night before. That was an annoying process but still very respectful.”

May December is about Elizabeth, an actress researching for a role who follows around Gracie Atherton-Yoo (played by Julianne Moore). Gracie is based off Mary Kay Letourneau, who like the character is infamous for starting a relationship with her 13-year-old student. In the film, Gracie married her student (Joe, played by Charles) and shared three children with him.

The film boasts a 92% Fresh rating on Rotton Tomatoes and received an eight-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It will be released on Sky Cinema in the UK on Friday December 8, but it premiered in the United States on December 1.

Fans have praised the film online, specifically Charles's performance. Viewers of the film are predicting he'll get an Academy Awards nomination for the role, not because of his prosthetic piece but his acting.

"What Charles Melton does in May December is so special, he has to walk such a fine line between child and adult," said one Twitter user, "I've never been so excited to see where someone's career goes. He's not just a star in the making but a really special kind of actor."

Another person on social media added: "I can't get Charles Melton's performance out of my head. He's just so good and the film itself is a freaking masterpiece dude."

Charles won an award for Outstanding Supporting Performance at the Gotham Awards a few weeks ago for his performance in the film. Besides his performance, the film as a whole has been loved by audiences.
