Winter is here and for many households, this time of year means keeping a closer eye on the heating to avoid soaring bills. This is where the never-ending debate comes into play, is it cheaper to keep the heating on low throughout the day or ramp it up once a day when you're feeling the chill?

As temperatures plummet across the UK in the lead-up to Christmas, with many areas being hit by snow, sleet, and frost, many people are looking to heat themselves and their homes as cost-efficiently as possible. And we have the exact answer as to how from an energy expert.

  • Get £50 off a money-saving Oodie that'll keep you warm all day
  • Get a fixed price for an energy-efficient boiler here

As Andy Kerr, the founder of BOXT boiler installations says leaving your heating on all of the time will actually cost you more money, even if it is on a low setting. The expert debunked the myth by saying it will leave households with a bigger bill as the boiler will be continually working.

He said: "It is much more energy-efficient and cheaper to set your boiler so it only fires up when you require warm water or heating, and only set your thermostat to the temperature you want your home to be. Cranking the thermostat up more won’t make the system heat up any faster, but will mean it continues burning energy for longer to reach that higher temperature.

“The constant burning of fuel to heat your home will not only result in energy being used but also energy being lost. In a standard home, heat loss can be quite significant compared to the heat you’re putting into it through your boiler and radiators, although if your home is well insulated, heat loss shouldn’t be too much of a concern."

Andy also explains that the exact temperature households set their thermostat to is crucial to avoid heating pipes freezing in cold snaps and steer clear from boilers running on overdrive and essentially costing more money in the long run. He highlights the key temperature this winter.

He said: "In the winter months you should be especially mindful of what temperature your thermostat is set to. As the weather turns frosty, there is a chance the water in your boiler system could freeze if it’s not being used at all.

"It’s generally advised to keep the thermostat set to a minimum of at least 10°C to avoid the risk of your pipes freezing... the ideal room temperature during winter is between 18°C and 20°C.”

And Andy from BOXT isnt the only expert to advise homeowners on the best cost-effective way to keep warm, as the man behind Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis, regularly shares similar advice. Including the money-saving teams well known motto 'heat the person not the home'.
