Donald Trump has boasted he will become a dictator for a day if he is re-elected.

The former president was asked if he would abuse his power to seek revenge on political opponents if he returned to the White House next year. “Under no circumstances, you are promising America, tonight, you would never abuse power as retribution against anybody?” interviewer Sean Hannity asked during a televised town hall event in Iowa on Tuesday night.

“Except for day one,” Trump responded. “I want to close the border, and I want to drill, drill, drill. After that, I’m not a dictator." The Republican presidential front-runner has talked about targeting his rivals - referring to them as “vermin” - and vowed to seek retribution if he wins a second term for what he argues are politically motivated prosecutions against him.

As Trump dominates the Republican presidential primary, President Joe Biden has stepped up his own warnings, contending he is “determined to destroy American democracy”. Earlier in the interview, Hannity had asked Trump if he “in any way" had "any plans whatsoever, if reelected president, to abuse power, to break the law to use the government to go after people.”

“You mean like they’re using right now?” Trump replied. At his campaign rallies, he said he has sweeping plans for a second term that include firing large swaths of the federal bureaucracy and targeting his rivals. His promises have alarmed Democrats and become a chief election argument for Biden as he prepares for a potential rematch against Trump in November 2024.

“Donald Trump has been telling us exactly what he will do if he’s reelected and tonight he said he will be a dictator on day one. Americans should believe him,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement.

The race for nomination as Republican leader is heating up with the candidates currently making their final pitches to face off against the Democrat candidate. The bookies are widely expecting that we will see a rerun of the chaotic, tumultuous and eventually violent election of 2020 between the former and incumbent presidents, Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

Candidates still in the running for the Republican primaries are Ron DeSantis - who was once seen as Trump’s biggest challenger but has recently faded off the map, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Chris Christie - the candidate most critical of Trump, and Asa Hutchinson.

Former Vice President Mike Pence was also previously in the running, but he ended his campaign after struggling in the polls to attract Republican voters away from Trump. A handful of other hopefuls, including Tim Scott and Doug Burgum, have also dropped out of the race.

With Donald Trump awaiting three trials scheduled for next Spring and a fourth pending a start date, the 2024 election could be even more erratic than the last if Trump is selected. But under the US constitution, there are no clear legal barriers to the disgraced former president once again running in an election even if he is convicted.
