John Kerry has been accused of farting during his speech at the Cop 28 climate conference.

A video seems to show the climate envoy to the Biden administration releasing a fart-like sound that was picked up by the microphone.

But the former secretary of state is now even facing ridiculous accusations of hypocrisy on social media for failing to reduce his personal emissions. Becky Anderson, Managing Editor of CNN Abu Dhabi, who was sitting on the panel near Kerry, seemed to notice and appears to bring her hand to her nose in apparent anticipation of what might hit.

"And the reality is that... erm..." he continues, perhaps stumbling over his words due to the embarrassment of passing wind on the world stage. But despite the awkward moment, Kerry continued his speech and received applause from the audience.

The 79 year old, experienced in handling high-pressure situations, regains his composure. He is busy arguing that no new coal-fired power plants should be permitted anywhere in the world, adding that he is becoming "more and more militant" in his beliefs on the climate.

"I do not understand how adults who are in positions of responsibility can be avoiding responsibility for taking away those things that are killing people on a daily basis," he said. "The climate crisis and health crisis are one and the same."

The Cop 28 summit began on November 30 and is scheduled to end on December 12. Before the summit, Kerry said that the US and China - the world's biggest greenhouse gas producers - planned to work together in Dubai. "We have decided to actually work together to get a successful COP, to get a successful global stocktake," Kerry stated.

However, controversy surrounded the opening of Cop 28 when it was revealed that the summit's president, Sultan Al-Jaber, had argued there was "no science" behind the claims to phase out fossil fuels. He added that sustainable development wouldn't be possible without them - "unless you want to take the world back into caves".

Al-Jaber claimed his comments were taken out of context. A spokesperson for Cop 28 said it was "just another attempt to undermine the Presidency's agenda, which has been clear and transparent and backed by tangible achievements by the COP President and his team".

John Kerry responded to the comments, stating on CNBC: "That's not the argument. The G7 countries voted that there should be a phasing out of unmitigated fossil fuel emissions and what there is science for is keeping 1.5 degrees as your North Star."
