Legendary jump jockey Davy Russell is to swap racing silks for sequins to take part in Ireland’s version of Strictly Come Dancing.

Russell, 44, retired from the saddle for good in April after making a brief comeback to cover for the injured Jack Kennedy at the Cheltenham and Grand National Festivals.

He reached the top of his profession winning the 2014 Cheltenham Gold Cup on Lord Windermere and on Tiger Roll completed back-to-back victories in the Grand National in 2018 and 2019.

He has now been announced as one of the celebrities who has been signed up for the latest series of RTÉ's Dancing with the Stars which begins in January.

"It's exciting,” he said. “And it's so very different to what I'm used to; it's a new venture. It’s really hard to keep it a secret from friends and family.

"I have itchy fingers and I'm ready to pull the trigger. My wife always told me we need to get dancing lessons before our wedding. I said no, and now I'm regretting this decision.”

Russell will try to emulate Nina Carberry, the only other ex-jockey to take part in the show in the previous six series, who won the glitterball trophy in 2022

He will be joining former Miss World Rosanna Davison, newsreader Eileen Dunne, Wild Youth singer David Whelan, drag queen Blu Hydrangea, TikToker Miriam Mullins, 2FM and Ireland's Fittest Family presenter Laura Fox and Fair City actor Shane Quigley Murphy.
