A babysitter has been left "confused" after being told off by the children's parents for "eating the kids' dinner".

A woman wanting to earn some extra cash on the side looked after a family's two little boys for the night, but the mum and dad were left unimpressed when they returned home. The children's parents left money on the side to be used for a pizza takeaway. But after the babysitter had some of the food for herself, she was schooled by the parents who said they "didn't expect to feed her".

"I've always been under the impression that the babysitter is allowed to have a reasonable amount of dinner if expected to serve dinner," the 20-year-old said. The childminder, who remains anonymous, explained that she had two slice of pizza and one breadstick after both boys had been fed. "This experience is eating me up", the worried woman added.

Sharing what happened on Reddit, the woman explained: "The family ordered pizza for dinner. The mum left cash on the table for me to pay. It was me, and two boys (7 and 10), a large cheese pizza and breadsticks. When the parents came home to relieve me they asked how tonight went. I said 'fine', and said that the pizza place was really good."

She continued: "The mum looked at me puzzled, and asked why I ate the kids' dinner. I just had two pieces of pizza and a breadstick. I feel as if this was not an inappropriate amount to eat. However, the parents disagreed. The dad said that they didn't expect to have to feed me dinner as well, and told me not to eat their family's food.

"I've babysat a few times in the past and have never encountered this. I am very uncomfortable and confused by this experience."

She added: "Both boys were fed, and did not complain about being hungry for the rest of the night. I personally have always assumed, perhaps wrongly, that if I am expected to serve dinner as a sitter than I am welcome to have a serving."

The conversation generated over 5,000 responses on Reddit; a number of people advised the 20-year-old woman to "stay away" from the family. One individual said: "Don't babysit for them again. That's some weird behaviour from the parents. I was always told to feel free to eat whatever I wanted while I was babysitting."

Another wrote: "I baby sat for over twenty years. Only had one weird family like this. They are rude and treating you like less than. Don't work for them again unless they paid well." Another said: "As a parent, I'm cringing. Do you know how hard it is to find a good babysitter? I'll happily cook dinner for the babysitter or give her pizza because having a reliable babysitter your kid likes is worth everything."

One person asked: "What were they expecting you to do? Cook your own dinner instead of watching the kids? Go without food?" Another added: "I would never in a million years think that anyone who is in my house at the same time as a fresh pizza couldn't have a slice. Friends, babysitter, whatever, if a pizza is ordered, everyone gets a piece."

A sixth individual said: "They trust you with the lives of their children but don't respect you enough to feed you? These people will never have your back and will blame you for everything that would ever go wrong, stay away."
