The new Fortnite chapter is underway and has rolled out Society Medallions that regenerate your shield over time. The more you carry, the faster your shield regenerates, But being in possession on a Fortnite medallion will put a target on your back.

After the festivities in Fortnite over the weekend – including the first Fortnite live event we've had since last December, and an in-game Eminem concert - Fortnite Chapter 5: Undergound is officially underway. As predicted by leakers, following The Big Bang event, there's a new Rocket Racing mode, Fortnite Lego skins, and Fortnite Festival to look forward to. But one of the most game-changing additions are the Fortnite medallions, called Society Medallions in-game.

These Fortnite medallions can really give you a boost in a match, passively regenerating your shields as they sit in your inventory; the more Fortnite medallions you have on you, the faster your shield regenerates. There are five Fortnite medallions – one dropped by each of the five new bosses on the map – but they each have a variant, so technically there are 10 Fortnite medallions in total.

Here's everything you need to know about Fortnite medallions and how they work.

What are Fortnite medallions?

Fortnite medallions in-game are called Society Medallions and have rolled out as part of Chapter 5. Having one in your inventory gives you a passive buff, but also marks you on the map for all other players to see. If you're downed while carrying a Fortnite medallion, it can be picked up by another player.

Fortnite medallions can regenerate your shield, speeding up the process the more you have in your inventory. In terms of the effect that has on your location on the map, the more you have, the more precise your location is displayed on the map to other players. The alt variant of Fortnite medallions will increase your max shield capacity instead of regenerating it.

There are five Fortnite medallions with an alt variant for each one.

  • Peter Griffin's Fortnite medallion / Peter Griffin's Fortnite medallion (max shield)
  • Oscar's Fortnite medallion / Tie Tiger's Fortnite medallion (max shield)
  • Nisha's Fortnite medallion / Fancy Fencer's Fortnite medallion (max shield)
  • Montague's Fortnite medallion / Dapper Dude's Fortnite medallion (max shield)
  • Valeria's Fortnite medallion / Femme Fatale's Fortnite medallion (max sheld

Each Fortnite medallion appears only once per match, carried by the new Chapter 5 Fortnite bosses. The bosses drop Fortnite medallions when defeated, and the first player to pick one up is the lucky target for everyone else to hunt down if they want a Fortnite medallion of their own.

How do Fortnite medallions work?

We know that Fortnite medallions will regenerate your shield or add to max capacity, depending on the variant, and that the buffs stack depending on how many are in your inventory; but Twitter leaker @Hypex shared the complete list of Fortnite Medallions and the stats involved depending on which type of Fortnite medallion you have on you, and the increasing effects as you hold more:

Fortnite medallions: max Shield

  • 1-2 Fortnite medallions – 110 max Shield
  • 3 Fortnite medallions – 140 max Shield
  • 5-5 Fortnite medallions – 200 max Shield

Fortnite medallions: regenerate Shield (normal medallions)

  • 1-2 Fortnite medallions – +3 Shield/ tick
  • 3 Fortnite medallions – +6 Shield/ tick
  • 4-5 Fortnite medallions – +8 Shield/ tick

How to get Fortnite medallions

In each match, there are five bosses and each one carries a Fortnite medallion. The bosses roam their own POIs so this is where you'll find them in a match. They're also marked on the map, so bear in mind that these POIs are going to be potentially packed with players looking for a Fortnite medallion, and subsequently, a dangerous hot spot. Here's every Fortnite Chapter 5 boss and their location.

  • Peter Griffin – Snooty Steppes
  • Oscar / Tie Tiger – Lavish Lair
  • Nisha / Fancy Fencer – Fencing Fields
  • Montague / Dapper Dude – Grand Glacier
  • Valeria / Femme Fatale – Reckless Railways

You'll need to defeat a boss to get their Fortnite medallion, and to tick off the 'assist in collecting a Society Medallion' challenge. If you're taking a boss on together, as long as the participants wanting to complete the challenge do damage to the boss while trying to get their Fortnite medallion, it'll still count as completed.
