Wrexham given Man City FA Cup warning after Reynolds and McElhenney success

Former Wrexham star Brett Ormerod believes the club has a Man City-style target on its back that teams will gun for in the FA Cup.

Following promotion from the National League, Wrexham are having another good season and sit second in League Two with 37 points. And thanks to their hit TV show "Welcome to Wrexham," supplementing their takeover, Hollywood club co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have raised expectations for success at the club, regardless of their position in the football pyramid.

As a result, Ormerod believes more and more opposition teams will want their scalp.

"I think they'll have a good cup run this year," said Ormerod to Stocklytics. "We saw the potential they have when they took Sheffield United to a replay last year. They've got a few quid, so they can go far.

"The only flip side is that whoever they play against now, especially in the lower leagues, it's like they're playing against Man City. Everyone tries to up the performance in that respect."

Wrexham face Yeovil Town in the second round this Sunday. It will be the first time the two teams have met since last April.

The Red Dragons advanced to the second round of the competition by defeating Mansfield Town 2-1 at the One Call Stadium. Sam Dalby and Paul Mullin scored the goals to secure victory.

In last year's FA Cup, Wrexham achieved notable upsets by defeating Championship team Coventry City and challenging Sheffield United to a fourth-round replay. Sheffield United went on to win that tie.

And it seems City and Wrexham are more alike than fans may think. Phil Parkinson praised his team's performances as they equalled the Blues' record (22) for the most league victories in 2023.

Parkinson said, "We're very proud of that because we're up against some very good teams across the pyramid of football. To be up there and talked about with names like Man City is a great achievement for everybody at the club."

"Like Man City will be saying when they saw that stat come out and how well they've done, it's about what's ahead. We know that we've done well to be up there and talked about with those names, but it's what's ahead and how do we go again and achieve even more."
