One in 10 millennials will decorate their toilet this Christmas – with 29% buying fun, festive toilet roll to spruce up the bathroom, research has found.

More than a tenth (11%), of this younger generation of adults, like to add some Christmas cheer all around their homes – with almost a third decorating their bedrooms, while 10% deck out their children's bedrooms.

However, they are shunning traditional decorations such as wreaths, nativity scenes, and garlands – in favour of quirky Christmas-themed soap dispensers and toilet seat covers.

It comes as a survey of 2,000 adults, who decorate their homes at Christmas, found that 34% reckon the bathroom is the room that needs the most cheering up at this time of year. And 13% would like to decorate it more – but don't know where to begin.

It also emerged that nearly half of those polled (45%) love to put up decorations – but admit that much of it is not very good for the environment.

It is perhaps no surprise, then, that just 35% of younger adults will put up tinsel, compared to 56% of 55-64-year-olds. And millennials are also far less likely than over-65s to display the festive poinsettia plant (10%, compared to 25%).

The research was commissioned by Who Gives A Crap, whose spokesman said: “Trends come and go in all areas of life, but it seems that’s also clear when it comes to Christmas decorations.

“The UK is finding new and playful ways to decorate more of their home at Christmas, finding more inspiration than ever before.

“What’s clear, though, is many take decorating their homes very seriously – considering where their festive guests will be spending the most time, and where they can really show off their creativity.”

However, despite reservations from the younger generation, fairy lights still top the list of the most popular decorations, followed by Christmas cards, tinsel, and festive ornaments.

And December 1 is the most popular date to fish out the decs, with 28% doing so on this day each year. Meanwhile, when it comes to packing them all away again after Christmas, one in 20 have left them up as late as February, according to the OnePoll data.

It also emerged that 15% put up a Christmas tree in most of the rooms of their house, while 44% do so in at least a few rooms. And artificial trees proved most popular, with 78% opting for one over the real thing (14%).

Six in 10 described their style approach as “minimal”, with over-65s most likely to confine their decorations to the living room, dining room, and hallway.

However, 18% go the whole hog with an over-the-top look, and 15% will even spend days – or longer – prepping and installing their decorations.

The spokesman from Who Gives A Crap added: “While the likes of the bathroom are becoming more of a focal point for festive flair, it’s clear that people need more inspiration for ways to brighten these less traditional areas for Christmas decor.

“Festive toilet roll is a great place to start with something to spark joy, that your guests will most definitely be making the most of. Recycled toilet paper is an even more eco-friendly way to brighten up your bathroom this Christmas season.”
