Netflix's Bridgerton season 3 in cast shakeup as lead star not returning

Bridgerton, one of the most watched shows on Netflix, will be coming back for season three and fans will see some major changes.

Nicola Coughlan who plays Penelope Featherington, spoke with Virgin Media Television's The Six O'clock Show, and said season three is "closer than it's ever been." Nicola said she does not have an exact date for the release but it will be releasing in 2024.

Season three will focus on Penelope's relationship with Colin Bridgerton, played by Luke Newtown. To Nicola, this season was one of the best experiences she ever had. It is supposed to be "really funny" and "romantic," she said. Nicola also said there are some rom-com elements but it is not one to watch with the whole family. Take that as you will.

Though the season does not have a release date, it has been revealed who will be returning, missing and replaced. While we wait for Jonathan Bailey to make his Wicked debut, he will be reunited with Simone Ashley, as Anthony and Kate. Their characters got married in season two. Everyone in the Bridgerton family, Claudia Jessie, Luke Thompson and Ruth Gemmell will be returning except Phoebe Dynevor, who plays Daphne. Florence Hunt, who plays Hyacinth Bridgerton and Will Tilston, Gregory Bridgerton, are expected to return but not confirmed.

Just like the Bridgerton family, fans can expect to see Penelope's family return, Polly Walker as Lady Portia Featherington, Harriet Cains as Philippa Featherington and Bessie Carter as Prudence Featherington.

After the Queen Charlotte spinoff, Golda Rosheuvel will return alongside Hugh Sachs as Brimsley. Adjoa Andoh will also be returning as Lady Danbury. Adjoa said fans can expect more of Lady Danbury's backstory, as seen in Queen Charlotte.

"Obviously, if people watch Queen Charlotte , they’ll have a stronger sense of Lady Danbury’s backstory, and that will absolutely inform what you see on screen in season three," she told Digital Spy.

Ruby Stokes, who plays one of the younger Bridgerton sister, exited the show in season two and has been replaced by Hannah Dodd.

Filming for season three started in July 2022 and wrapped in 2023. After filming, Nicola looked drastically different as she underwent a makeover for her new role in Big Mood, a comedy series. Nicole started as an aspiring actress trying to make her way in Hollywood, struggling and trying to makes end meet. Things have drastically changed now as Nicola's career has taken off and was on Emmy-award winning show, Derry Girls.
