It was clear Grace Dent was heading for a premature exit days before she left the jungle.

The food critic told campmate Josie Gibson she'd 'had enough' moments before leaving the I'm A Celebrity camp after finding out she'd been chosen by the public to take part in a Busktucker Trial. Grace was then missing from the camp before Nick Pickard read out her statement confirming she'd quit on medical grounds.

Speaking to the Mirror I'm A Celebrity 2022 alumni Scarlette Douglas and 2003 winner Phil Tufnell shared their thoughts on why Grace may have felt it was time to leave.

The I'm A Celebrity legend and former England cricketeer admitted he'd previously spotted a sign Grace wasn't going to complete her journey in the jungle. He said: "I think there was a couple of days beforehand where you could tell the spirits were low.

"You’re a bit cold, you’re a bit wet and it can get on top of you. I think sometimes you’ve got to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in and if you don't fancy it's no disgrace, you just say I can’t do it."

Scarlette continued: "It is tough in there, I don’t have kids so I can only go on the experience of others that are missing their children. I was missing my nieces and nephews and I can only imagine it would be 10 times as much."

"You’re away from everybody on the other side of the world, you don’t have your friends and family with you, you’re thrown into this situation with personalities that you might not normally hang out with," she added. "Then you're thrown into these crazy situations where you’ve got to eat this and drink that and you're getting dunked with stuff.

"It can be way too much, it can be too daunting and overwhelming. I hope she's okay but fair play for even being in there in the first place because it is tough."

In a statement, ITV said: "Unfortunately Grace Dent has left the show on medical grounds. She has been a great campmate and will be missed by her fellow celebrities and viewers alike."

Speaking to her campmates via a statement read out by Nick, Grace said: “My dear camp mates, I’m so sorry to let you down. I have left the camp for medical reasons. My heart is broken, I have loved and enjoyed getting to know you all.

“You’ve held me up and it’s been a pleasure being your friend through this experience. Leaving you all at this stage will be one of the saddest things in my life. I love you all. Your friend, Miss Grace Dent.”
