FA Cup holders Liverpool begin their trophy defence with a third clash against Wolves in the competition under Jurgen Klopp's reign.

The Reds' manager has twice come unstuck in fixtures with the Midlands club, losing in the fourth round in 2017 and the third round two years later. That does not bode well given Liverpool's current indifferent form, with Klopp's side coming into the tie off the back of a damning 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

Meanwhile, Wolves are embarking on a new era under boss Julen Lopetegui, losing just one of their four fixtures since the post-World Cup restart. And a point away at in-form Aston Villa in midweek will have boosted confidence they can go to Anfield and cause another upset.

Here's all you need to know about the match...

When is Liverpool vs Wolves?

The two sides will battle it out in Saturday's nights late fixture with the Anfield showdown scheduled for an 8pm kick-off.

They are yet to meet in the Premier League this season, with their last fixture coming back in May - a 3-1 win for Liverpool on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign.

That was Liverpool's seventh successive victory over their counterparts, with Wolves' last triumph that third round victory on the same January date four years ago. Ruben Neves' long-range strike proved the difference that day after Raul Jimenez and Divock Origi goals had the tie all-square.

Team news

The big concern for Liverpool is the fitness of Virgil van Dijk, with the Dutchman ruled out of this clash after aggravating a hamstring injury in the Brentford loss which has forced him to seek assessment from a specialist.

That leaves the door open for Joel Matip or Joe Gomez to return to the side - or possibly both if Klopp decides to make wholesale changes. Kostas Tsimikas endured a woeful 45 minutes against Brentford before he was subbed at half-time but may be handed another chance to impress.

Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Fabio Carvalho are all in contention to start, while youngster Stefan Bajcetic could also be in line for another appearance after Liverpool's shoddy midfield showing last time out.

Meanwhile, Wolves' goalscorer against Villa, Daniel Podence, is nursing a knock sustained in the 1-1 draw and will be assessed ahead of the trip to Anfield. Otherwise there are no new injury concerns for Lopetegui to contend with.
