Being overweight is a big problem in the UK, affecting around 40 per cent of us.

Roughly a quarter are classed as obese, a medical condition characterised by excessive body fat which has a hugely negative impact on our health, ranging from the psychological such as depression and low self esteem, to the physical - including:

  • Increased risk of chronic diseases: Obesity is associated with an increased risk of several chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases (such as heart disease and stroke), certain types of cancer, and respiratory disorders.

  • Metabolic syndrome: Obesity is often linked to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, abnormal lipid levels, and increased abdominal fat. These factors collectively increase the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

  • Joint problems: Excess weight can put added stress on joints, leading to conditions such as osteoarthritis.

  • Sleep apnea: Obesity is a common risk factor for sleep apnea, a condition characterised by interruptions in breathing during sleep.

Yet losing weight is often easier said than done, often requiring us to make - and stick to - meaningful lifestyle changes to our diet and exercise routine. But experts have suggested there is a way to help speed along weight loss efforts by popping a few natural ingredients into your hot drinks.

Coffee experts at Beanies recommended four tasty ingredients you can try:

Cinnamon

With its slightly woody and aromatic fragrance coupled with a warm, sweet flavour, this most versatile of spices is tremendously popular, but did you know it packs a few health perks, too? The experts said: “Cinnamon contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and may even help to stabilise blood sugar. Sprinkle some on top of your coffee or stir in for the full aromatic experience.”

Cardamom

This slightly sweet Asian spice will certainly add a whole new dimension to your coffee.

“This spice has been linked to various health benefits, including improved digestion and metabolism,” they said.

“Crush a few cardamom pods and brew them with your coffee.”

Lemon

Lemon teas have been around for ages ... but a lemon coffee? That'll be a new one on most.

The experts said: “In isolation, both ingredients have clear health benefits. Lemon is a known toxin-flushing ingredient which can also boost your immune system and reduce heart disease. One of the key reasons for the popularity of the trend is the belief that the drink can kickstart your metabolism. Lemons are rich in vitamin C, which aids the body’s natural fat-burning processes, while coffee can stimulate brown adipose tissue, which plays a key role in how quickly we can burn calories as energy.”

But they stressed this 'no fat-melting super solution' should never be substituted for a balanced diet and a decent amount of exercise.

“There’s still no harm in trying it out for yourself, however, and it’s well worth experimenting with some recipes to tantalise the tastebuds and potentially promote your wellbeing,” they said.

“For the more classic experience, brew your favourite coffee, then slice and squeeze the juice of half a lemon into the mug. Stir well and enjoy the zesty goodness. Optionally, add a teaspoon of honey for extra sweetness.”

Coconut

This tropical plant has long been lauded for the sheer amount of things you can actually do with it in the kitchen. The experts added: “A dash of coconut oil in your coffee can provide a creamy texture and a subtle tropical flavour. Coconut is known for its ‘thermogenic’ (producing heat) properties, which can aid fat burning.”
