A flood warning has been issued over rising water levels as locals are told to "act now".

Throughout today, water levels have been rising in the Cottingham area, in East Riding of Yorkshire following recent flooding in the region. This led to concerns from the Environment Agency who have now warned locals to "act now" as flooding is expected.

Their main concern is that water levels may quickly rise through into Monday morning with further rain forecast throughout the night, and into Monday and Tuesday. The worst area affected is on Creyke, Mill and Broadlane Becks. The Environment Agency asked people to take action to protect themselves and their properties.

Alongside this, it asked locals to consider the routes they took when heading out, and to avoid low-lying footpaths. In its warning, it said: "The area most at risk is properties around King Street, Northgate, Dunswell Road and North Moor Lane. We continue to monitor the forecast. Please take action to protect yourself and your property and monitor local weather and river conditions. Consider putting your flood plan into action and avoid using low-lying footpaths near local watercourses."

As part of its advice in a flood, the government body recommended Brits:

  • move vehicles to higher ground if it’s safe to do so

  • move family and pets to safety

  • move important items upstairs or to a safe place in your property, starting with cherished items and valuables, then furniture and furnishings

  • turn off gas, electricity and water supplies if it’s safe to do so; never touch an electrical switch if you’re standing in water

  • if you have property protection products such as flood barriers, or air brick covers, use them now

  • keep track of the latest flood risk situation

If you’re in immediate danger, you should always call 999. Otherwise, they say Brits could keep a bag prepared with vital items like insurance documents and medications in case they need to leave their home quickly.

Alongside that, they should know how to turn off their gas, electricity and water main supplies. You should also plan how to move your family and pets to safety.
