A 13-year-old girl has set a world record after combining two of her favourite hobbies - scuba diving and magic.

Avery Emerson Fisher, from the US, loves scuba diving as much as she loves magic. So she decided to combine her two talents and break the Guinness World Record for the most magic tricks performed underwater in three minutes.

Avery managed to perform an incredible 38 tricks within the time limit, blowing the previous record out of the water. Professional magician Martin Rees from the UK set the record in 2020 with 20 tricks, with Avery going on to perform almost double that.

During the coronavirus lockdowns, then-10-year-old Avery was asked by her dad Jon how she wanted to spend the quarantine. That's when the idea came to her. She had always loved visiting her local aquarium and decided that she'd like to learn how to scuba dive.

She began studying and passed her online exams with flying colours. Then, Avery began training and earned her open water diver certificate during the summer. Since then, she has gone on to earn a further 12 certificates and has undertaken more than 30 ocean dives.

Avery is incredibly passionate about marine conservation and ocean stewardship and hopes that by sharing her dives she can raise awareness of the issues blighting our oceans while also inspiring others to give scuba diving a go. So, Avery decided to marry her skills up and attempt to break the world record.

She headed to the iconic Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco, California, on November 11 to show off her set of skills. She dove down into the tunnel aquarium to carry out her showcase, where temperatures were as low as 14C as schools of fish swam around her.

Family and friends watched on in awe from the tunnel as Avery worked her way through as many magic tricks as she could in three minutes. Her attempt was videoed before being reviewed by a Guinness World Records Adjudicator and a pair of expert witnesses.

They confirmed she had successfully carried out 38 illusions, or magic tricks, having prepared a total of 50. Despite the cold, Avery said she felt at home in the tank.

In fact, she even named the fish swimming around her during her practice sessions, including one she dubbed Zeeto, who seemed keen to keep her company as much as possible. The Mark Day School pupil trained for months in order to attempt to break the record.

Avery tested her underwater magic skills in a variety of different bodies of water and even earned a Scuba Magician certificate from Chef Anton, the creator of Scuba Magician, an PADI Distinctive Speciality. Chef Anton, whose real name is Anton Riniti, said Avery became the world's youngest Scuba Magician after he certified her at just 12 years old.
