Met Office verdict on UK being hit with 'significant snow' in weather scenarios

The Met Office has warned that the UK could be hit with "significant snow" in the coming days.

While most Brits will miss out on the snowfall over Scottish hilltops this weekend, Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Harris predicts "a return to widely colder" conditions from early next week. Mr Harris suggests two possible weather outcomes.

Initially, he expects some rain or showers along the east coast, which could become increasingly wintry as the week goes on. Beyond mid-week, the forecast becomes less certain. The most likely scenario is a band of rain moving across the country from west to east.

However, there's also a chance for a "more active weather system" from the southwest, Daily Star reports, which could bring snow to many parts of the UK. Mr Harris mentioned that if this weather system hits, we can anticipate "more widespread rain, stronger winds, and the potential for more significant snowfall should the air over the UK become sufficiently cold ahead of it".

He added: "Either way, a continuation of colder than average conditions seems most likely, more details will become clear over the coming days and, as you would expect, we will be monitoring developments in the forecast closely."
