Isla Fisher has shared details of a touching gift her husband, comedian and actor Sacha Baron Cohen, bought her in memory of her late father, charity worker Brian Fisher.

The 47-year-old actress was heartbroken in January this year when her father, who worked as the chief executive officer of Western Australia ’s Save the Children Fund, passed away aged 84. Isla, who has been married to 52-year-old Borat star Sacha since 2010 and shares three children with him, has been reconnecting with her Scottish roots in recent weeks.

The Aussie soap star is the daughter of Scotsman Brian and his wife, Elspeth - who is also Scottish. Isla was born in Oman where father was working for the United Nations before they moved back to Bathgate in Scotland where Isla was raised until she was six-years-old and work opportunities then took Brian and his young family Down Under.

Speaking to the Daily Mail’s You Magazine, Isla has explained that she has been helping support mothers in Scotland who are struggling to feed their own families as the cost of living crisis continues to bite - and statistics from Save The Children show that food poverty is affecting families in Scotland higher than the rest of the UK. As a Save The Children ambassador herself, Isla has been honoured to carry out work near her childhood home - and she has also been reminded of her late father while working in Scotland.

She told the magazine: “This is the first time I’ve been to Scotland since Dad passed away in January, aged 84. Over the past months, I’ve learnt to cope with the sudden and searing waves of grief that were once overwhelming. Now, being here in Scotland makes me feel closer to him. I hear his voice in the accents of the people I meet. I see his stoic determination in theirs.”

She went on to explain that her father’s larger than life personality inevitably set her on a course to a life in acting - and even credits him with sending her on a path towards future husband Sacha. Isla explained: “Brian Fisher was born into a working-class household in Bathgate the year the Second World War erupted. A modest, brilliant man, he was best known for his sense of humour. Jokes were a currency in our family and you were rewarded for getting the loudest laugh. Plus, nothing was off limits, something that has no doubt inspired my comedic acting over the years – and possibly my choice of husband too.”

The actress then explained that her husband supported her through her grief in January and bought her a thoughtful gift so she could always keep her father’s memory close. She said: “After he died, Sacha bought me a ring so I could hold his memory close every day. It’s a simple gold band with a delicate Scottish heather. It reminds me of home.”

In the article, penned by Isla herself, the star reflects on the work she has completed for Save The Children since she joined the organisation as an ambassador in 2012. She is proud to have worked on a breastfeeding campaign in the past where she travelled to Brazil where she met mothers who shared breastmilk to feed premature babies. She is also proud to have supported North Lanarkshire’s Home-Start, a community support project that works with Save the Children, this winter, helping provide support to pregnant women and those with young children who are struggling with challenges such as mental health, poverty and isolation.
