Wes Nelson shuns 'showmances and materialistic lifestyle' after Love Island
Love Island star Wes Nelson has been open about his rapid rise to fame and fortune, revealing he was officially a millionaire aged just 21.
The reality TV star says he's enjoyed the wild ride to stardom but prefers a more low-key life these days, telling The Mirror he now opts for "multi-pack clothing" over designer gear. Chatting to us ahead of his first European tour as a musical artist, Wes says he's totally transformed himself, ditching his "materialistic lifestyle".
Now 25, and a celebrity in his own right following the storming success of his hits Nice To Meet Ya, See Nobody and feature on Clean Bandit's Drive, the former Islander is enjoying life without being 'flashy', even giving away his £100,000 Mercedes G-Wagon.
It's not just fancy cars and expensive clothing Wes is finished with. His dating life hasn't exactly been kept under wraps, with his extremely public relationships playing out in front of the nation on TV as well as all over social media. Wes tells us the thought of dating in the public eye now gives him the "heebie jeebies".
"I've had quite a few public relationships, and it's not natural," he tells The Mirror. "And believe it or not, I know it sounds funny me going on the telly and doing different shows and stuff, but I'm actually quite an introvert, especially when it comes to dating.
Love Island star rushed to hospital after losing consciousness at home"I prefer to keep things private. I've certainly learned to keep things private now. So it's just I don't think it's natural to have that many opinions and that many thoughts and ideas around your relationships. So I try and keep my dating off screen now."
Opening up about living a more low-key life, Wes continued: "I just buy multiple packs of [unbranded] white and black T-shirts most of the time and just rinse them. I think everyone goes through that stage you know, I think it's easy to get caught up in buying flash stuff and doing this and that and you just realise it's not for yourself.
"Even though you convince yourself that you're buying these things to make yourself happy it doesn't make you happier you just end up just spending a load on rubbish and yeah, I think I'm way past that again. I'm back to just do my normal investment things and property and obviously investing back into music is the main the main.
"I don't post a lot and put things out there a lot now, I've just really taken a backseat in that sense, whether that's just maturity or it's just that I got bored of it, I just realised it wasn't for me." Wes told use why he thought he needed to look flashy, adding: "I think especially when I started music, I had this idea that you got to look like a music artist.
"But what does a music artist look like? It looks like yourself and that's the truth of it is it shouldn't be you trying to put on a persona and buying watches, chains and stuff. Don't get me wrong, it feels empowering when you put them on stage, but outside of that, I try not to be that person. I've just learned that being an artist is not just about how you look is being true to yourself. And that should be how you present yourself."
